If you’ve heard the term “Fresh 48”, but you’re not sure what it is and you’re super curious, this is where you need to be. If you’re about to give birth and you want every first moment with your brand new baby captured, this blog post is for you. If you have any regrets about the blurry cell phone images captured after your last birth and desperately want to savour those sweet moments this time around, I am speaking directly to you.
Okay, now that we’re on the same page, let’s talk about a few very important things:
a) What a Fresh 48 session is;
b) Why the heck you absolutely need one; and
c) What you can expect from me as your Fresh 48 photographer.
Let’s get started!
What is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 Session is a photography session that happens within the first 48 hours of your baby’s life. Your photographer will come to your chosen place of birth after your baby has made their big debut; typical locations include your home, the hospital, or a birth center. Some of the moments typically captured with this session include skin to skin; feeding; baby with each parent; the whole family; meeting siblings/other family members for the first time; baby’s details like fingers, toes, ears, and nose; and of course, lots and lots of baby snuggles.
Why do I need a Fresh 48 Session?
Hiring a photographer for a Fresh 48 session is a beautiful opportunity to have one less thing to stress about – that’s right, a photographer can actually alleviate some of your stress! You won’t have to worry about how you’ll be feeling after birth, because let’s be honest, you might feel like crap. And I mean this with the most amount of sympathy, and truth – your body just did a huge thing by giving birth to your baby, you have no idea how you’re going to feel! Most likely you’ll be exhausted once the adrenaline and oxytocin has worn off from all your hard work, and in some cases you’ll even be bed-ridden (either from physical exhaustion or from doctor’s orders).
Speaking from my personal perspective, I did not get to have the postpartum experience in the hospital that I wanted. Unfortunately I had a severe postpartum hemorrhage, so I was very anemic. This brought on symptoms of exhaustion, dizziness, lightheadedness, and difficulty breathing. I was bed-ridden for a minimum of 12 hours, but needed assistance getting to the bathroom for most of the next day. I couldn’t even lift my newborn out of his bassinet, I was so weak. I had planned to take some adorable Fresh 48 photos of my own baby, but I could barely get out of bed, so things didn’t go the way I had hoped. I don’t want you to miss out on your opportunity, I want you to get the beautiful photos that you deserve to have on your baby’s birth day.
What can you expect from me as your Fresh 48 photographer?
First of all, I care. I care a whole lot. I care about you reading this blog post, I care about you as my client, and I care about your birth and postpartum experience. I want you to be able to focus on your recovery while I focus on capturing beautiful organic moments between you and your growing family.
During our consultation before birth, we’ll discuss what moments are the most important for me to capture. I will be on call for you to keep me updated on how labour is progressing and when the birth happens, and then I will join you at your chosen place of birth usually the day after your baby is born.
Because of the unpredictable nature of birth work, and being on call, I am only able to take a certain number of clients per month. If you’re considering a Fresh 48 session, please reach out so you don’t miss out on your chance to have those precious first moments captured.
